Wyssmont is uniquely positioned in that the Wyssmont TURBO-
DRYER® is the only economically and commercially viable
technology in the world that can be used to produce Bio-Coal from
waste wood on a commercial scale.  Bio-Coal can be produced at
BTU values which allow it to be used as a direct substitute for coal,
and which can be easily micronized for use in existing coal-fired
boilers.

The Wyssmont system can also be used to torrefy any form of
biomass into a coal substitute.  Even such materials as bagasse and
switch grass have been successfully torrefied in the Wyssmont
system.  GBCE will be using woody biomass at its facilities and will
integrate the Wyssmont system into it’s Turn-Key-Bio-Coal-Plant.

The unit consists of a stack of slowly rotating circular trays.  Wood
chips, pellets or biomass are fed onto the top of the dryer and
deposited on the slowly revolving series of shelves.  The capacity of
the dryer/torrefier is limited only by the volumetric capacity of the
shelves.



After one revolution the material is wiped onto the next lower tray where it is mixed, levelled, and distributed upon the
shelf at a uniform height, then sent to the next tray where the operation is repeated until the torrefied product is
discharged from the unit.  The trays are contained in an enclosure in which heated air or gas is circulated by internal
fans.  The Wyssmont dryer/torrefier can both dry and torrefy in a single chamber.

The Wyssmont system can operate with a 75% reduction in feed rate without the quality of the product exiting the
system being affected.  An excellent product having a reliable BTU value will always be produced.

The entire system operates in the absence of oxygen at elevated temperatures.  The absence of oxygen is necessary to
prevent oxidation of the biomass during the torrefaction process.  In the Wyssmont system, nitrogen is the inserting
atmosphere.
